James McConnell Anderson Shearwater Pottery, founded in 1928 by Peter Anderson, was influenced by and flowed with the American arts and crafts movement. Peter (1901-1984) was the eldest of three brothers, including Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-1965) and James McConnell Anderson (1907-1998), the subject of WAMA’s 2007 Centennial Calendar Perceptions of the Gulf Coast. All of the brothers were instilled with a love of nature and given encouragement and exposure to the arts. Their mother, Annette McConnell Anderson, urged them to write in a daily journal and to draw a picture a day. When James McConnell, called “Mac” by his family, was six, his mother asked a teacher from Newcomb College to teach him to model clay. Mac Anderson evolved a unique and individual style in design and painting over his lifetime. Although he held outside jobs to support his family, his output in art was both steady and prolific. The amount of decorated pottery, figurines, paintings, murals, block prints on paper and fabric, furniture and wood carvings are testament to his commitment to produce art. Coupled with his early training, living and working on the Shearwater Pottery compound near his brothers and other family members gave encouragement and direction to his development.
